A phrase Paul often uses in his letters has stood out to me for quite a while: walking in a manner worthy of the gospel—or some variation of that.
so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; - Colossians 1:10
I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, - Ephesians 4:1
we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory. - 1 Thessalonians 2:12
Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel,- Philippians 1:27
The analogy of walking has made it into our Christianese language as well. Perhaps someone has asked you, ‘How is your walk with Jesus?’ There is no assumption that you actually took a walk with Christ for a bit of exercise. The variation of language in Philippians 1 helps us better understand Paul’s analogy, walking is our manner of life. Walking refers to our living, our daily step-by-step plotting through life, the side-by-side devotion to Christ. Walking is the practical, day-to-day Christianity. And our walking should be worthy of our calling. It should be worthy of God. It should be worthy of the gospel of Jesus Christ. That is, the way we live should line up, or be in step with, or match up with our God and his gospel. Walking means our Christianity is not just about confessing certain truths, but also about living in certain ways. That the truths we confess actually influence the lives we live, in everyday, practical ways.
Are we walking in a manner worthy of the gospel? Is our Christianity actually impacting how we live? Does the way we spend our time, entertain ourselves, handle money, parent, work, date, talk—is it done in a manner worthy of our calling? There are many aspects of our everyday lives that this applies to in a challenging and hopefully helpful way, so that we can line up all of our life to be in step with our calling.
All of life is all for Jesus. We desire to put every aspect of our lives in step with Christ. Connect with a trusted friend in the faith to discuss each area of life and how you are or can better conduct that area of life in a manner worthy of God. As our Christianity gets more practical, may our witness get more powerful and our relationship with God more joyful.
